The Multi-Cult, Traitors, Islamization, LKY, Mind Control--The Anti-News

Murray seems to be stepping it down these days, Putnam remains, however absurdly, true red:

Freeman Dyson, decorated physicist, properly thrashed by Greg Cochran, less decorated physicist:

Great quote apropos such traitors: "In many cases, people seem to have done this for the sheer joy of licking Satan’s arse, not for the money."

The Muslim population doubled in the UK over 10 years--they're now almost 10% of the under 25 population:

From a comment by Kgaard:
This is exactly the sort of anti-life mentality that Nietzsche correctly identified as being integral to Christianity. If you won’t make Aristotelian judgments about what is good and what is bad in THIS world and then fight for them, you end up a pathetic pawn of events — always fighting your own DESIRE to judge (which is innate) but never actually doing so out of guilt. You become resentful of those who are willing to judge and fight for what they determine to be correct and true.
This is the PC COEXIST mindset in a nutshell.

Inadequately eulogized by the MSM:

Singapore does have 2 large problems:
1. It's never been self-sufficient in defense, though it could be. It has a population equal to Israel's Jewish population and a GDP higher than Israel's.
2. It's an unbelievable population sink (birth rate of .8 children per woman)--meaning it's not a sustainable example for the rest of the world.

A stroll through one of the most influential political works of the twentieth century (and the more eloquent of the 2 early works on propaganda's place in the modern state--the other being Walter Lippman's 1922 book "Public Opinion"):

Exponentializing Orwell

https://firstlook.org/theintercept/2014/02/24/jtrig-manipulation/
Our Inner Party is rather more clever and possessed also of rather more technological options than Oceania's Inner Party was. Though not very good qua novel, Orwell's conceptual apparatus strikes me more and more as an indispensable element of political education. Of course that evil and incompetent faggot, Hoover, commenced this subterranean war against the American citizenry back in the 20s. And to this day the FBI is far better at tracking down petty domestic threats than guarding against real threats, like the espionage programs run by major powers. The Farewell Dossier, hand delivered to Reagan via a top Soviet KGB agent in 1981, demonstrated that the Soviets had such a vast and comprehensive spy program in the West--especially in America--that the technology thus acquired had kept their economy and military afloat throughout the Cold War. Of course, before the Cold War we had simply given them our technological riches. In other words, their entire economy and most of their military was founded on exogenous innovation. Outside of modest contributions to pure science and a few military advances, there was no innovation in the Soviet bloc. It was a gigantic, truculent parasite. But, the FBI had detected virtually none of this activity. Apparently catching bank robbers and destroying the John Birch Society was more important in their provincial minds. Now the Chinese are the principal threat, yet no signs of savvy FBI countermeasures appear. Though their economy is more efficiently organized than the Soviet's was, they've yet to demonstrate a capacity for innovation. They are quite good at technology theft though. The FBI's primary role is to manufacture consent domestically. I suspect the DIA/NSA/CIA/NGA/NRO/OICI/TFI/INR/etc. nexus does little more than manufacture consent abroad. The "democracy" part of our polity is strictly for purposes of public entertainment, like the circuses, indeed very like the circuses, in old Rome. Whether this odd configuration of national defense can last one wonders. Against the Soviets, some success may be claimed. But, then, their economic system was so outrageously inefficient, it made us look good in comparison. Their capacity to utilize all the tech their spies stole was badly constrained by their economic system. The Chinese have a better--probably a much better--set up. And, their demographics look much more formidable numerically, and somewhat better qualitatively. Confining American espionage to manufacturing consent at home and abroad will next be measured by its effects on the two remaining great powers. Which will suffer more damage from the firehose of egalitarian propaganda issuing from NYC, LA, and DC?

Anatomization of Progressive Adaptability and Cyclicality

The following is excerpted from a comment left on a post on this neo-reactionary blog post: http://www.xenosystems.net/quote-notes-64/.
The comment's author is the proprietor of another neo-reactionary blog: http://handleshaus.com/
Handle shows how progressivism has religious characteristics, but is a religion without a central authoritative text or a single locus of human authority. Consequently, it is maximally adaptable, manipulable, survivable, keeping in power those ruthless enough to ride its snaky path--but its perfunctory logic and its unprincipled basis in rhetoric leave it with minimal social, economic, military, or any other sort of optimality. Note, by the by, that the best of the neo-reactionary blogs attract comments of a higher quality than most articles in standard publications--and, as mostly pseudonymous writers, they even find the freedom to trample presently protected political fetishes--when such impede the search for truth or amusement.

Handle's Comment:
The strongest belief systems is one that can change opportunistically without admitting its changing, pretend it is part of a continuous tradition without resembling even its recent forbears, and become absolutely impervious to criticism or falsification. Like a religion.
I think the ACA-hours thing is a good example of what you see a lot of progressive writers do, and what Yglesias is particularly skilled at doing first.
The pattern of any particular debate is:
1. Progressives develop policy goal A, and implementation B.
2. Opposition says that B will cause negative trade-off or unintended consequence C – that Progressives themselves currently accept as negative, or at least something that is seen by most of the public as negative.
3. Sometimes the argument goes further and deeper with the Opposition saying anyB that is trying to accomplish A leads to C, there’s just no way around it.
4. At first Progressives deny B->C. But that is sometimes falsifiable, or just a total howler.
5. Then Progressives say, well, ok C, which is bad, but A is worth it. This is a matter of subjective valuation, which is why is it a dead-end for discourse, spinning around the same cul-de-sac forever.
6. And if that’s not satisfactory, then someone like Yglesias notices the obvious solution to the problem which is just to come along and say, “Actually, C is a good thing, or at least it has a bright side which we’re ignoring and which can trump the negative side. Only stupid people caught in dead-ends don’t see this. We should have more C! The burden of proof should now shift to people who are opposed to C!” This is the ultimate in ‘spin’ – and ‘flipping the script’ is why we call it spin.
7. And then everybody else suddenly realizes the immense power for winning the debate behind adopting a new set of beliefs where C is a good thing, and a day after Yglesias does it, I see a dozen other high-Alexa county writers repeat it. All of a sudden, the frame of debate shifts and the desirability of C is new dead-end, and the ratchet proceeds one notch at the expense of replacing a former progressive belief with a more useful new one – an adaptive mutation.
An example is the recent minimum wage stuff: The CBO came out and said it would mean less jobs in the midst of a weak labor market for the low-skilled. Since the CBO is progressive gospel – they can’t afford to criticize the number and ruin the credibility of a source they constantly use as a weapon. And all sides agree fewer jobs in this situation is bad, right?
And then, suddenly:
http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2014/02/18/cbo_minimum_wage_hike_would_cost_jobs.html
The outcome that the CBO is forecasting—an outcome where you get a small amount of disemployment that’s vastly outweighed by the increase in income among low-wage families writ large—is the outcome that you want.
A minimum wage hike with a small but real disemployment impact is the minimum wage hike you want.
Then it tweets and tumbls and reblogs all over the place. Now the question shifts to ‘what’s the ‘optimal’ number of job losses for a minimum wage hike to maximize ‘prosperity’, which, yeah, is kind of a fuzzy, manipulable notion, but what we were really always shooting for.
Tyler Cowen pushes back against the avalanche here: http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2014/02/the-cbo-report-on-the-minimum-wage.html
This is a perverse kind of Bayesianism where the policy cart is driving the ideology horse. One begins with subjective ideology and an empirical theory of policy implementation. When the data proves your theory produces results that are ideological negatives, then you just switch the valence to positive in your belief system. The means become the ends. Raising the minimum wage isn’t good because it redistributes more wealth from capital to labor without causing unemployment or inflation, raising the minimum wage is good in itself, and if disemployment and inflation are the results then they are also now positives we should have slightly more of.
Once you witness these progressivism adaptive mutation-cycles occur a few dozens of times a year (at least), you realize that change is the only constant

Media Omissions

http://rochester.ynn.com/content/top_stories/490926/jury-finds-roderick-scott-not-guilty/
Just a little companion piece to the trayvon fiasco. Note that this case got no national publicity. Lies of omission are the media's best weapon, because they are the most difficult to discover--and the majority have no time for it. The omissions are legion and sprawl all over the spectrum of topics. Essentially, if you have not acquired independent expertise in a given topic, the fair assumption is that the media has manufactured your opinion on it--the only question is which media did formed your mind for you, that is, which generation of media (the 40s, the 60s, the 90s). In the long run, which media brand you consume hardly matters at all. Fox follows MSNBC with an average 20 year lag, just as republicans follow democrats.

Unthinkable Patterns

http://isteve.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-hunt-for-great-white-defendant.html

Most people have only a subconscious awareness of this pattern--and all that their subconscious actually picks up is that white men are evil. Consider that the time factor may be The Cathedral's crucial advantage. These "great white defendants" are typically smeared by the media for months before they are vindicated. Not being especially bright or rational in any of us, the subconscious ineluctably absorbs months of anti-white propaganda. Is this long training in "good thinking" supposed to be effectively counterbalanced by one day of articles that offer quiet, subdued, coldly factual confirmation--not of innocence, of course--but of dubious acquittal? The Cathedral can fail every attempt to generate its ideal defendant--that is mere tactical failure--the powerful subterranean current of its endless propaganda will continue to win the war, will continue to erode away the foundations of Western civilization.

And didn't Sailer provide a convenient collection for us? Do you know of anyone out there today--or even any publication--that does better journalism, within such a range of specialization, than Steve Sailer?

Leviathan Their Puppet

http://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/our-american-pravda/
http://unqualified-reservations.blogspot.com/2007/09/is-journalism-official.html

Like the authors of these two articles, I too believed, and for a long time, that I was savvy enough to "interpret" the press--that I could discount the known prejudices of press institutions and writers. But, in the course of a few years in my early thirties, the truth came to me. It is a thing impossible to accomplish. And the most insidious category of lies of which the press stands guilty--a category fully functional only in an atmosphere in which no effective opposition exists--are the lies of omission.

I ought to note that I have not read all the material on the anthrax, POW, and nuclear espionage stories in the first article. The other matters mentioned there are well-known.

Of the second article, may I submit that I do not frequently happen upon a writer possessed of an almost egregiously superlative talent--but, when he turns his talents to the provisioning of my entertainment and edification by means of firing a forest of dead lies and clearing the land for new growth, and prophecies rebirth in allusive, many-tentacled, metaphor strewn prose, I count myself blessed. Consider his comparison of official journalism to its predecessor, an implicit admission that no simple solution to the problem of accurate information exists. Yet, as a de facto branch of the civil service, the pseudo-apolitical caretakers of the people, see how we find ourselves closely mewed up in a statist circle of thought. State education and the state-adjunct press determine (with condolences to Emerson) the horizon beyond which almost no one can think. From within that horizon an occasional chink of light only may sparkle from the great beyond, to be interpreted by most inmates as a random reflection of the real world within the horizon, since either they do not realize an horizon exists or they believe what lies beyond it is mere madness; but in fact the potentially saving light emanates either from the internet or an old book.

Examples of journalistic fraud and negligence:

No press outlet thought through the meaning of the real estate bubble before it burst, though some saw the bubble (eg The Economist).

"Paleo" nutrition was excluded from the press, though convincing scientific literature extends back 100 years, and the world grows obese.

The press carefully excludes the real effects of immigration policy in the white world, though America is threatened with socialism economically and a recapitulation of Brazil's social experience--while Europe faces submission to the Caliphate.

Reporting on trade policy ignores the collapse of strategic industries in the US and Europe, in process of being systematically overrun by state-financed corporations of the Far East.

Crime reporting ignores the black on white race war in America: blacks commit 83% of violent inter-racial crimes between blacks and whites, and 20,000 black-on-white rapes occur per year compared to less than 10 white-on-black rapes per year.

Reporting of racial inequalities ignores the IQ differences, the cultural differences, the different criminal propensities, different levels of accomplishment--or ascribes black/mestizo deficits in each area to racism, thereby inciting racial animosity among both the superior and the inferior.

War reporting tilts against the US at every opportunity, while giving the enemy the benefit of the doubt. Also, war reporters rarely explain that a "humanitarian" counter-insurgency is just another way of saying "guaranteed failure with profoundly anti-humanitarian consequences."

The list of mindlessly idealistic official wisdom and state-sanctioned-and-sanctioning bullshit never ends--is there a field of thought or action in which the official press is actually right?

The unexampled power of the press in pseudo-demotic society is similar to that which Hobbes ascribed to state officials who "resembleth the Nerves, and Tendons that move the severall limbs of a body natural," one of whose responsibilities it is "to teach the people their duty to the Sovereign Power." Hobbes also remarks on the ultimate spiritual guides directing the goals of his Leviathan, men such as Jesus and Paul, and those with authority to expound upon these men. Our ultimate guides today, though, our cultural Marxists, deem themselves holier than these, present themselves as supra-Christians and Platonic philosopher-kings, presume themselves, in short, more idealistic than their forerunners and more consciously divorced from (transcending?) reality. Oh, and godless as well, since their ascetic stance and posture would be incomplete if they were to nestle themselves under the warm, comforting promise of divine succor.

Leftism is Inversion

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/06/the-gay-guide-to-wedded-bliss/309317/

Our leftists are not stupid. Banal, yes, but not stupid. This gay train started quietly down the tracks several decades ago, mostly traveling nights, colors subdued. Gradually all were exposed to the sight of the ugly thing and, despite a particularly dark and dangerous run of track encountered soon after it left the station, its course thereafter became ever more promiscuous and visible, with a visibility perhaps slightly enhanced by some friendly cosmeticians, stylists, tailors, and most of all strategic concealments--what scoffers may have misapprehended as propaganda. Observing this generation of dark passages, the Obama team, with exquisite acumen in temporal judgment, then announced to the expectant gathered gay world that the time is come, a glittering runway to the future awaits--the Big Apple, Showtime, Broadway! Free at last, free at last, great Obama almighty, free at last! And the train bears down on us brilliant, garish, violet, pink, mauve, lavender most of all--yes, all the hues so much beloved of the heavy-boned-and-browed, bristle-faced unimpregnable female, this enduring, ever-renewed insult to Darwinian fitness. And a huge phalanx of cheerleaders lines the track, Harvard, the USG, the NYT, The Atlantic, the American Federation of Teachers, Hollywood, the Donkeys leading the Elephants and their "churchly" friends as always to the mire. And the people, well, the people somehow no longer think what they used to think of this train, their aversion somehow (who knows how?) turned to welcome, to "tolerance," or, at least, to submission. How gay is that?

Some Holdouts Speak

This is a Catholic take on the course of Western decadence. I have noticed that intelligence and erudition are not often lacking in the Catholic intellecto-sphere. Even the comments maintain a standard.

I might riposte with the sense that a true tracing of our moral decline rounds right back to Christianity itself, especially the Puritan branch which eventually produced that fleur du mal, New England's Christian Socialism. It is this Christian Socialism that infected our elite more than 100 years ago, claiming the title of "Progressivism," and which morphed and melded, under increasing Jewish-cosmopolitan influence, into a mode of Europeanized thought better termed cultural Marxism. What we now have, then, is a hyper-egalitarian form of Christianity minus God. And this set of values not only determines the political and social trends of America, but is exported aggressively to the world. Our first target, Western Europe, is notable for being even more thoroughly dominated by cultural Marxism than we are--not surprising if one considers that we played Dr. Frankenstein to their corpse-monster after the War. They are our creatures; our elite made them what they are, without any interference from elements like the masses--nor even from powerful residual institutions (like the Catholic Church), such as slow down leftist reforms in America. Our elites availed themselves of the tabula rasa they'd created--one reason FDR determined upon unconditional surrender at war's end.

In considering of this article, I reflected further upon the value system in which our elite places its faith and for which it exercises its power. One of the handful of pivots is the spiritual and material benefits of diversity upon which they presume.

Supporters of diversity presuppose uniformity of human talents across groups, at the genetic level at least, and consider that all signs of non-uniformity of talent indicate different cultural and other environmental conditions. They do not believe in meaningful genetic diversity across groups. They therefore deem cases in which a group is underrepresented to be proof that there is prejudice against that group in the particular field. They seek, then, to achieve cultural/racial/sexual diversity in each field, at whatever cost to other factors, such as competence. The problem arises from the initial presupposition of equal human talents across groups: this is quite clearly not the case. There is in the world both genetic and cultural diversity across groups, to different degrees and variously intermixed. In other words, to achieve "diversity" these diversocrats ignore real genetic diversity and seek to include diverse cultures in every field at equal levels of representation, which has the effect of reducing real cultural diversity. The attempt to equalize the interests and achievements of every culture guts the particularity of each culture, its essential character. So they seek to ignore one form of natural diversity (the genetic) and reduce the other (the cultural). It's a nice Orwellian game for the religiously earnest devotees of diversity to deny one major form of human diversity and suppress the other.

"Diversity," as used by these people, our elite, actually means uniformity. They want uniformity, at least in the masses. They believe this will render the world more politically stable and also make people easier for them to mold because more interchangeable. They fear that the scientifically confirmed genetic differences between human groups, races especially, will exacerbate the usual tensions caused by cultural contrasts. Of course, they have a point here. But, one may well question both the means and the ends of their workings. Is uniformity really a superior human future to one featuring conflict and competition? Have they failed to notice that China, like all healthy nations, seeks primacy, and not merely of the primus inter pares sort? And this egalitarian fantasy combines with the infatuation with pity-motivated and -justified government social supports to create a society which inflicts equality by leveling down. After all, the standard may always be lowered, but the more it is raised the more exclusionary it necessarily becomes. The decline of standards throughout society follows ineluctably. Anyone who disagrees with this interpretation of the meaning and priority of diversity is rigorously excluded from the elite. Intellectual diversity is proscribed.

This is the wrong way. The incapables ought to be discouraged from breeding, and if an entire group manifests disproportionate incapacity, then that group ought to move to a nation dominated by its type--or submit to its fate, as determined by talent and effort, among superior people.

Review of The Specter of Communism

The Specter of Communism by Melvyn Leffler
This is a brief book on the origins of the Cold War, slanted politically two ways: in its omission of information that undermines the author’s Soviet sympathies and in chastising the Americans for not making the most flattering assumptions about Soviet intentions. Leffler barely mentions, for instance, the pervasive network of Soviet agents throughout American and British government agencies from the 30s on (see the Venona Project). This gave Stalin knowledge of Western plans and strengthened his negotiating position. It also gave him major information on the fission and thermonuclear bombs. Then he fails to mention that the Anglo-American allies permitted the Soviets uncontested access to the Balkans during WWII, despite Churchill’s insistence that the Soviets would impose totalitarian governance on the region postwar. He fails to notice that FDR had intended a joint American-Soviet invasion and occupation of Japan (which would have been strategically disastrous postwar). Leffler ignores the consistently weak hand the Anglo-Americans (i.e., the spy-infested, communist sympathizing Roosevelt administration) played in its dealings with Stalin. Roosevelt is guilty of the terrible folly of presuming moral equivalence between America and the USSR. This presumption led to his belief in fair play with Stalin, a concept utterly alien to that master of realpolitik. Leffler, though, thinks Roosevelt’s approach to Stalin was “shrewd and pragmatic”—an apt description only of Stalin’s management of Roosevelt. Remember, Roosevelt did not demur when Stalin demanded Soviet assimilation of the lands Hitler ceded to him under the 1939 Nazi-Soviet Pact—a massive concession that condemned many millions to virtual enslavement.

Leffler faults Truman for taking defensive measures in Europe, instead of continuing down the Roosevelt path of incremental surrender.  He accuses Truman of focusing on “the Kremlin’s ominous [postwar] conduct and overlook[ing] signs of Soviet moderation.” He defines moderation here as meaning that Stalin did not conquer new lands at every possible opportunity, but contained himself to submitting only 8 or 10 nations. How is this moderation? Essentially, Leffler wants to excuse all of these Soviet aggressions based on the toll the Soviets had suffered in WWII. Yet, why is this cause that Lithuania or Estonia should cease to exist, that Poland should lose territory and have its people removed to the West, that N. Korea should submit to a puppet communist regime? Stalin, Machiavelli’s best student, took what he believed could be had without a fight (with his spies indicating what America would fight for). Under Roosevelt, it turned out he could get a great deal. Leffler credits Stalin’s moderation for pulling out of Manchuria. But he only did so because he knew it was strategically untenable—the Chinese would eventually fight to recover it, and in the interim it upset the West.

At one point Leffler says of the Truman administration: “U.S. officials were indifferent to the brutality and repression of Stalin’s dictatorship at home so long as the Kremlin showed restraint abroad.” But, of course, they were far from indifferent—otherwise the ideological dimension of the Cold War would have disappeared. In fact, they were fatalistic, quite a distinguishable perspective, and one largely to their credit. They had no reason to believe they could effect regime change, or even the reform of a hostile superpower. Need I mention yet another pro-communist omission by this Leffler hack? China, perhaps a nation of some strategic consequence, went communist in 1949. The effective absence of U.S. aid to the non-communist forces goes unmentioned. He does mention that Stalin aided Mao, but does not dare fault him for it. Double standard? Nah. He merely blames Chiang Kai-shek’s incompetence, then mocks the Republican party for criticizing Truman’s negligent China policy.

He claims Truman in 1947, with the Marshall plan and the Truman Doctrine, had moved “decisively to an adversarial relationship.” Yet, the first was simply economic aid, which was also offered to the Soviets and their substates. The second was a defensive understanding to help freely elected governments resist armed insurrection. To call these measures, under the circumstances, decisively adversarial appears a mischaracterization—is not the insurrection itself, supported by outside communist states, the source of animus? He cites Stalin’s fears that accepting American aid in the Soviet Union and its sphere would have given the U.S. control over the Soviet economy: this is absurd, but Leffler offers no reality check, implying it was a legitimate fear. A few years of aid was no threat even in Eastern Europe, much less in the Soviet Union. Stalin was simply consolidating his empire's ideological purity in the postwar uncertainty. But, declining aid was a paranoid tactical misjudgement. Another unmentioned asymmetry in superpower relations was the freedom of communists in Western nations to form parties and pursue political power. In Eastern Europe this was out of the question. Leffler does kindly notice that American influence abroad was mainly a consequence of “persuasion, inducements, and financial leverage,” implicitly in contrast to Soviet methods. The Berlin blockade receives a straight retelling.

Leffler says that Truman “was willing to fight domestic subversives.” Yet, he kept Harry Dexter White in a leading diplomatic position for two years after the FBI had provided ample evidence that he was a spy. Truman later lied about this, claiming that White was dismissed “promptly.” The considerable damage White did is well-documented. The author does not mention that Truman declined to take the obvious step of intensifying the investigation Soviet espionage in America even after the Soviets tested the fission bomb earlier than expected in 1949. Then Truman vetoed the McCarran Act, his Secretary of State supported Alger Hiss after Hiss was convicted of lying about spying for the Soviets, and he fired his vigorously anti-communist Defense Secretary, Forrestal, for being unpopular with left-wing Democrats (Forrestal died mysteriously a few weeks later).

In apologizing for Soviet connivance in the North Korean attack, Leffler says “Truman and Acheson were unaware of the instrumental effect Kim himself had played in initiating the conflict.” If Stalin and Mao had not approved, it would not have happened. Kim had no effect; he was not instrumental, he was their instrument; this was naked Soviet supported aggression to subjugate a non-communist nation. Stalin is not faulted, of course. He just wanted a “buffer.” They forced Truman’s hand, as Leffler notes: “If the Kremlin thought the Americans would equivocate in a crisis, Moscow might be tempted to act more adventuresomely.” The State Dept, already a leftist stronghold, warned against even trying to free N. Korea—to stand unequivocal was one thing, after all, but to actually believe in the American cause was past the capacity of State. Truman was not sufficiently tamed, though, and set MacArther to take the peninsula entire. The administration’s reluctance to use atomic bombs was reasonable. They were willing to do so if the enemy significantly escalated, also reasonable. Yet, given tremendous qualitative superiority in all respects and quantitative superiority in terms of war production potential, the US could have won decisively without the Bomb. The commitment was not made. Stalemate resulted. I might add that even Eisenhower ducked his responsibilities by signing the Korean armistice right after Stalin died, even though his death presumably weakened the Soviet side.

Of McCarthy Leffler says he focused exclusively on looking for spies, while ignoring foreign policy, though Leffler thinks “few of them actually existed in the American government.” Contra Leffler, counterintelligence is foreign policy! And to claim the Soviets were running only a few spies is demonstrably wrong at this point. The number of communist sympathizers, moreover, at State and elsewhere, bears emphasis as well. But, Leffler contends that “even more threatening to democratic traditions and a free society [than the military-industrial complex] was the new Red Scare.”So, then, unconsciousness of Soviet espionage was the better route—the one which won us the victory of securing nuclear plans for the immaculate dear leader Stalin? McCarthyism was a pathetically inadequate attempt to restore political balance in America after a communist sympathizing four term President and the domestically pro-socialist two term President who succeeded him. Neither the Chief Executive nor the FBI did their jobs in these years. McCarthy’s demagogy was crude and some of it misdirected, since he ought to have concentrated on the federal government and nothing else. The American Left was lucky that the pendulum swing was so weak and so late: they were able to hide their revolutionary machinations for almost twenty years behind the Depression, the World War, and the onset of the Cold War. They had transfomed America from a democracy to a socialist democracy and prepared the ground for the bureaucratic socialist oligarchy forthcoming. In his conclusion, Leffler claims that the Americans “exaggerated the ability of the Soviets to capitalize on [postwar] developments,” including those led by “revolutionary nationalist leaders” in the third world—an absurd claim, motivated again by this Soviet apologist’s urge to blame America first, a habit consistently evidenced in his book from beginning to end.

Leffler does a better job on the conceptual level of explaining the interactions of power and ideology in Cold War tensions. The dynamic of the Cold War: the rivalry was one of ideology and power politics. Power politics is always territorial, but in this case, since each ideology was universalist, both elements of the rivalry urged territorial expansion. Thus, Stalin wanted mastery over Eastern Europe to expand his geopolitical power and to spread his ideology to new lands. And American influence over Western Europe was also geopolitical and ideological. The two motivations usually overlapped, though it might be argued the Soviets were more consistent in aligning the two. American support for the Shah of Iran or the Afghan mujahideen were power political plays, but contrary to our ideology. Even the Soviets, though, had close ties with India, a quasi-capitalist democracy. Generally, when it came to a choice, power politics proved more important to each side.  The game of power politics never yet has ceased, though it forms itself into a variety of configurations in different times and places—in this case a bipolar configuration was inevitable. Before the war it was multipolar, given the power of Germany, Japan, the UK, and France. The ideological dimension has rarely approached the prominence of the capitalist-communist opposition. Comparable to it, though, were wars arising from the theological splits of Muslim-Christian, Muslim-Hindu, Protestant-Catholic, and such like. As a final spur to make the security dilemma inescapable, both powers in the Cold War believed they had to attain at least equal global territorial power to ensure the long-term continuance of their regimes. Neither could long survive international isolation.

How to Proselytize

HBD means human biological diversity, that is, different races are...uh...different, including genetically.

Basically, to achieve persuasion, he's saying Don't Be An Autist: people respond to emotional manipulation, not logical manipulation. He is right. Political Correctness is a religion. Religions are built on faith. And faith founds itself on emotion. Transform their emotional relation to the topic and they become converts. Expose them to logical fallacies and they retreat into emotional denial. The fact that logic and science happen to be on our side ought not to be a disadvantage--though, in the wonderful world of propaganda it's often irrelevant.

A Documentary on Taxation

It might be useful to literalize the notion that we pay a third of our income to the government. In this vein, a film depicting people working directly for all the government departments instead of paying taxes (indirect work) could also be amusing. Four months total for the government, eight months for one's family. That would be 3-4 weeks under a drill sergeant or commanding officer, another 4 weeks under orders from the local nursing home or retirement resort, 2-3 weeks attempting to impart knowledge and values to the new and rising generation, a delighful 2-3 weeks supporting the duskier races in their slums and ghettoes and prisons, and on and on and on... Being assailed by the hundreds of federal agencies one after another, then by hundreds of state and local agencies could create a memorable image.

Spot the Bias

Of course, in Africa, this sort of thing is so common that it's not newsworthy. But, in a sense, blacks are always in Africa. The NY Times, being the principal national organ for defining political correctness, cannot bear to report the facts of this horrific case. The doctrine of PC inculcates black victimology and rejects black criminality as an illusion created by an unjust, racist society. Beholden to this item in their catechism, mention of the black facts is verboten--particularly that it was a large group of black, and only black, men and boys who repeatedly raped this 11 year old Mexican girl over the course of 10 weeks, keeping her silent with threats of violence. But, the NY Times does go deeply into the problems of the families of the rapists, and tacitly agrees with them that their rapist family members were engaged in consensual intercourse with a "slutty" girl who deliberately tempted them. Is there an award for worst journalism? Like the Razzies for acting? These reporters ought to be, not only fired, but run out of the profession. I have never paid a dime for the privilege of reading the NY Times. I never will.

Dunceries

For those who still consider Beck, Limbaugh and company anything more than cartoon figures:
Those who submit to leaders who lie to them for fun--
Well, demagoguery is still a going business.

Our Communist Bastion

This is an interesting article on the influence of the communists in Hollywood. It's telling that their greatest success in Hollywood appears to have been a matter of excluding anti-communist films from being made. They had virtually no success in popularizing pro-communist films. I attribute this partly to the visceral anti-communism in American popular consciousness and partly to the inherent difficulty of making any kind of political propaganda into entertainment or art. In the end, it's almost comical: communists have had an enormous presence in Hollywood since the 30s--but, their influence on the American people looks almost trifling given their control over the heart of American popular culture. They deserve failure. They have always been both intellectually and morally bankrupt.

The Pied Piper's Song

If we really wished to induce the young to pursue science and engineering, we would more effectively convey its seductions. Instead of merely grinding them through the fundaments, we would also introduce some of the grand challenges and possibilities.

Here, for example, is a concept I just learned about--one which may be absolutely vital within the next 20-30 years--an attractive time horizon for current students:
Many other possibilities lurk on near or far horizons: the promise of nuclear fusion, of discovering the "god particle" in a particle accelerator, of building a space ladder with nanotechnology, of computational neural interfaces, autonomous vehicles, gene therapy, tissue engineering.

If we had a pied piper who knew how to sing this song...

The Tradition of Improving the Truth

http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/228267/does-he-lie/charles-krauthammer
Obama's guerrilla warfare form of mendacity reminds me of Clinton's moment of apotheosis: "It depends upon what the meaning of the word 'is' is." Krauthammer here presents a quality expose of the Obama style of persuasion. He is too clever to lie outright, but deliberately misleads that part of his audience susceptible to being misled--which is the great majority of it. A far left President and a far left House leadership are the wrong people to reform our health system. Obama's rhetorical efforts cannot conceal this socialist reality.

The Meaning of American "Poverty"

Welfare does not count as "income" for determining whether a household is defined as poor by the government. This greatly diminishes the relation between its definition of poverty and the reality of poverty. But, of course, the Left considers close relations with reality too painful to contemplate, much less seek out. Hence, this rather successful propaganda campaign that brays about the high "poverty" level and the need to increase welfare spending (though the poverty determination formula prevents even a tripling of welfare spending from impacting the "poverty" rate). What we have here is another number without a comprehensible meaning to the vast majority of Americans. But, who can compete for public legitimacy with the propagandizers of the Census Bureau who churn out these lies?

Another important reality rarely noted is the incentive structure the government foists upon the poor to not work too much or get married: both work and marriage reduce the various forms of welfare payments.
