The Left and Illegal Immigration

In response to this editorial, typical of the NY Times, I offered a comment which they did not post:
The socialist "humanitarians" who run the NY Times unthinkingly support Illegal Aliens at every opportunity and confidently adopt a holier-than-thou tone. Mexico, however, the source of most Illegals, is a middle-income country. Mexicans are not driven to America by desperation, but by the common human motive of aspiration. The "humanitarian" course of action would be to license truly desperate people from truly poor nations to enter America. I have seen little interest from socialists in this prospect.
But the primary interest of the NY Times in this issue is not "humanitarian", it is political. More Mexicans reliably means more Democratic voters. They are merely a means to an end for socialists, including the socialist hypocrites who run this paper. The fact that business owners, especially big business owners, also conceive illegals as a means to the end of increased profits only makes matters worse. Both parties have effectively (that is, in practice) supported illegal immigration for decades. But, at the core of both parties' "open immigration" policies lie hypocrisy and cynicism. "Humanitarianism" is a red herring.

Illiberal Indoctrination

A blog post from halfsigma below. Between the "indoctrination advantage" possessed by leftists and the continued influx of Mexicans, it's hard to see how the Republican party, as currently constituted, can sustain its competitive position. Recovering power in at least some of the institutions mentioned ought to be one of the highest priorities for conservatives. Also, the recession ought to be used to blacken the perception of illegal immigration and thereby reduce Mexican immigration to the reasonable levels permitted by law. And there is no reason why conservatives cannot capture a significant number of religious Hispanic voters, if they formulate a real strategy to do so.

President of the Rest of the World

BO has come up with a new justification for blanket legalization of all illegal immigrants: they have to be legal to benefit from Obamacare. This is nuts. We're already far too generous with illegal immigrants. This would certainly increase the flow of illegals and thereby increase the tax burden of citizens. We have the most generous legal immigration system in the world: why should we reward these illegals whose first act, invading our national territory without legal permission, was a crime?

Illegal Health Care

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/06/health/policy/06immighealth.html?hpw Illegal immigrants are supposedly not subsidized for low income under the Obama plan, but they can enroll in the "public option"--which is by definition subsidized. This will not only effectively legalize illegal immigrants, it will clearly encourage more to illegals to come so to avail themselves of their "legal" rights as illegals. This proposal is especially audacious (or shameless) in the current economic circumstances. Who does this guy work for? Something like this doesn't even benefit the blacks (BO's favorite recipients of nepotistic patronage), except indirectly insofar as more Mexicans may abett long-term Democratic political power.

Immigration Balance Sheet

I'm beginning to see the outlines of a new American tradition: privatize profits, socialize expenses. The financial sector has become notorious for doing this on a devastating scale. But, those businesses that employee illegals are doing essentially the same thing--they benefit from cheap labor and stick the taxpayers with the costs of their employees' medical care, education, imprisonment, welfare programs, etc. These businesses are just another self-concerned special interest. And you may depend upon it, they are well represented in the political game. Until the employment laws are enforced, illegals will continue to pour in--short of this, you have no more chance of preventing their immigration than of stopping the flow of drugs--which is to say, you have no chance at all.

But, there will be no Operation Wetback redux.
